DR ALINE SMITH

MBBS FRACGP GAICD Master Mental Health (GP) Master Health Prof Ed

I graduated from UNSW in 1986 as a doctor and started on a journey to strengthen my skills as a GP.

I now know that my main interest is in the management of complex disease providing long term and personal care to patients across the lifespan. I love teaching and have been a GP supervisor for many registrars who would like a career in general practice.

I am registered to provide antenatal shared care with RPAH, Canterbury, The Sutherland and St George Hospitals and have child health experience through working in Community Paediatrics during my earlier training as a junior doctor. I enjoy looking after the contraceptive needs of women as I have additional skills in IUD, implanon and diaphragm insertion having trained at Family Planning Australia NSW. I am one of two doctors in Sydney who use the Vedascope to assist women with comfortable cervical screening (pap smears).

My other interest is in counselling and treating people with mental health conditions from eating disorders to anxiety/depression with a particular focus on what keeps people well through promoting mental resilience in the community.

Being a proud mother of a son with severe autism has taught me the lived experienced of navigating the health care system from a carer’s perspective. This understanding has led me to advocate and be a GP to a number of people with disabilities.

My chill out moments are spent cooking (and eating great food!), gardening, making jam and exploring Sydney!
